ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture, an ancient form of healing dates back centuries, perhaps as far back as the Stone Age. For thousands of years, it has been used in China and other Asian countries. Acupuncture is a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which includes herbal products, dietary recommendations, cupping therapy (creates suction to stimulate blood flow), moxibustion (heat therapy), exercise (tai chi, qi gong), and tui na (massage).

Interest in acupuncture (US) expanded in 1972, when President Nixon went to China and learned about this powerful alternative treatment option. In 1995, the FDA classified acupuncture needles as medical instruments.

It is estimated that 3 million adults use acupuncture every year in the US. Acupuncture involves stimulating certain points (by hand or electric stimulation) on the body by inserting very fine, hair-thin stainless-steel needles (sterile and disposable) through the skin. It helps remove blockages or disruptions in the flow of Qi - vital energy within the body, through certain pathways (meridians). There are 12 main meridians, which represent organs and body function. It is believed that if Qi (pronounced chee) is blocked or excessive, then disease or health issues may occur.

According to research, acupuncture is a very safe option with very few side effects. It is used to help those suffering with chronic low back pain, neck pain, knee pain and headaches. In addition, it is used to help/manage:

  • Anxiety

  • Arthritis
